Finally, after a couple of tense weeks when the writing was already on the wall, the UK government has advised the public to work from home if they can.
It is such a relief, as it has been clear for at least a week that this should be happening. I live in London, the hardest hit region of the UK, and the government’s nonchalant behaviour about the virus meant that a lot of people were behaving irresponsibly and myself and my wife felt like outsiders.
It was almost like we were being gaslit!
So today, after working from home on Friday and Monday, we have the government’s blessing to do what we should have started last week at least. I’m so glad I pushed for it, although it shouldn’t have been so difficult to get approval.
Anyway! I slept better last night than I have for a couple of weeks.
We don’t know how long this will last, but it will be at least several weeks, and some scenarios don’t see this ending until 2021. There is going to be an adjustment period which will be harder for some than for others.
Town hall meetings will need to be live streams from computer screens. Shaking hands replaced with the elbow tap. Sharing stories in the office kitchen replaced with video chat sessions primarily for gossip!
It will be interesting to see how things develop.
